We will look at the road conditions to determine which way we should go on that day. We have booked accommodation in both places, and they're both fully refundable the day before (June 18). I know that the ride will be much less scenic, or even not scenic at all, but to us, it's still a better option than having to drive 2 hours more. This means that we will not have to go through the closed Tioga Pass and the drive times are still somewhat similar. Since Tioga road has not opened yet, we are somewhat worried and thought of another plan - staying in Bakersfield instead of Lone Pine for the night. Therefore, we will not drive through the Sonora pass. Five hours is already maximum for us - and it's almost impossible to drive more than that in one day. Living in a small city - Hong Kong, we're not that used to long drives. Tioga Road is a spectacularly scenic drive through Yosemite National Park. The 46-mile road is a continuation of Highway. Note: There is not food service, store, or water along the route bring food. I know and have looked at the option to drive to lone pine by Sonora pass, and it's 2 hours more than by Tioga Road. The National Park Service announced that Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park is set to reopen July 22, but the conditions are less than ideal. On the next day (June 19), touring Yosemite in the morning and drive to lone pine by Tioga Pass. The opening date also remains unknown for the park’s most popular seasonal route, Tioga Road, which connects Yosemite to the Owens Valley near Lee Vining and Mono Lake. Opening Tioga Road is a complex task in any year, the national park said in a video about the Jopening that shows an excavator placing K-rail traffic barrier on Tioga Road. Please check the National Park Service (Yosemite) webpage for more info and updates.To clarify, we were planning on driving to Yosemite from San Francisco on June 18th, and spending the night there in Yosemite. You may want to try and reschedule to August depending on how comfortable you are with snow travel, because if the road is opening 7/4 you will hit a lot of snow. It is still early but there is a lot of very dense snow in the Sierra. Deep snow coverage persists above 9,000 feet. This is shaping up to be a very big winter and it is a very real possibility Tioga Pass will not be open by 7/4. Snow is also present in some shady areas as low as 8,000 feet. There is still a lot of snow up there! Meadows and some trails are flooded. Other campgrounds on Tigoa Road will remain closed in 2023. Tamarack Flat and Porcupine Flat campgrounds may open this year but no estimate is available. A general information desk near the visitor center will also be open 9 am to 5 pm. The Tuolumne Meadows Wilderness Center will open (8 am to 5 pm). The store will remain closed (food and fuel not available). Vault and portable toilets will be available but there will be no water.
